Artist statement

Anna is a British artist living and working in Frome, Somerset. Throughout her career, her work has been inspired by her environment – the people, places, and cultures that surround her. Following graduation from West Sussex college of Art in 1994 with a first class degree, she traveled extensively in India, South East Asia, and Africa, creating figurative work which endeavoured to capture people immersed in their daily lives, offering an insight into the essence of a different culture. Commuters in London and bathers on the beaches of Dorset have also inspired her work but, during the national Covid lockdown, she became fascinated by her local landscape in Somerset. She creates work in oils and charcoal, working directly from life and then refining ideas in the studio. She is most excited working intuitively, directly from life, whether it be a life model in the studio, a flock of sheep in a field or, her most recent obsession, birds in her garden – she finds an intense energy and freedom which, she hopes, is evident in her work.

Anna has exhibited regularly in London at the Mall Galleries SWA, RP, NEAC, Pastel Society and SWLA, and in the South West, winning prizes including the Prince of Wales Drawing Prize at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Open Exhibition, the Anthony J Lester Prize and the Bath Society of Artists Prize and People's Choice Award and she was elected a member of the Bath Society of Artists in 2018.
